The Mustang Lifestyle

When you own a Mustang, you own the most iconic automobile that has ever been produced. Why? Because the Ford Mustang has spawned more magazines, websites, and clubs then any other automobile in the world. Just by buying a Ford Mustang, new, used or a classic, you become a part of this ever-growing community of people who are already enjoying  “The Mustang Lifestyle”.

As if the magazines, websites and clubs aren’t enough, the Ford Mustang also has the Mustang Club of America (MCA) and it’s thousands of dedicated members. For those of you who are not familiar with the MCA, the MCA is a huge national organization for all Mustang enthusiasts and boast members from all over the world. To promote and preserve the Ford Mustang for future generations, with the help of their 180 MCA Regional Mustang Clubs, the MCA organizes, promotes and host Regional and National Mustang Shows all over the United States. In fact, in 2013, so far the numbers are over 120 Regional Mustang Shows and 5 National Mustang Shows, one of these being the Grand National Mustang Show held at Disneyland in Orlando, Florida. These Regional and National Mustang Shows are held all around the United   States so that every Mustang owner can attend. MCA members all over the world live the Mustang lifestyle everyday.

With is the Mustang lifestyle and how do you get it? Ownership is the first step to really enjoying this great automobile and its heritage. To prove my point, every Mustang owner I know has had people that they don’t know come up to them and tell them their Mustang story. If you are a Mustang owner reading this, you know exactly what I mean. At the supermarket, car wash or ball field, when they see you with your Mustang, people will approach you and tell you their Mustang story, whether you ask them to or not. Suddenly, you, and this person who you do not know from Adam, are bonded together by your Mustang because they want to tell you their Mustang story. Telling their Mustang story is so important to them that they will start talking to total strangers, as long as they are standing by their Mustang. When you get down to it, all the Mustang stories are pretty much the same. The stories are always about the Mustang they owned and sold, or the story is about the Mustang that a family member or a friend owns or has owned. Having people you don’t know talk to you about their Mustang experience is a big part of the Mustang lifestyle!

Of course each Mustang story has its own variation. As a Mustang owner, I never get tired of hearing these stories from people I don’t know. As they are talking to you, you can see the enjoyment these people get from telling you their story. Many Mustang stories end with, “I wish I had never sold my Mustang!” I have to tell you, this doesn’t happen if you own a Toyota Camry or some other type of generic people-mover car! But, it does when you own a Mustang. This is a part of the Mustang lifestyle that you will start living as soon as you buy your first Mustang!

These people, the non owners or self proclaimed past owners, will come and go and will probably never really understand what it means to own a Mustang. But, you will also meet another type of people. Like a moth is drawn to a flame, your Mustang will draw other Mustang enthusiasts to you who share your Mustang enthusiasm. These will be the people who also live the Mustang lifestyle. In fact, the Mustang enthusiasts who live the Mustang lifestyle to its fullest do so because they belong to a Mustang Club. Mustang clubs are the corral where Mustangs and their owners hang out, plan and do Mustang stuff together. Believe it or not, there’s only around 500 Mustang clubs in the United States. I’m sure you can find one in your area!

How much enjoyment you actually get from owning a Mustang is up to you. If you embrace the Mustang lifestyle, it will bring you many new friends that you will have for the rest of your life. If you simply use your Mustang as transportation to get you back and forth to wherever you go, you will not get the full benefit of the Mustang lifestyle. In years to come, this will result in you becoming one of those people who approach Mustang owners and tell them that you once owned a Mustang. You’ll probably add that you never should have sold it, too!

I have to believe that if you’re reading this, you’re either a Mustang owner, a past Mustang owner, or want to be a Mustang owner. In any case, you’re probably wondering how you can become more a part of the Mustang lifestyle that I spoke of above. The answer is simple; join your local Mustang club today! As I said above, this will get you introduced to many of the Mustang enthusiasts in your area and open a whole new social group for you to enjoy. Mustang clubs are made up of people of all ages, who come from all walks of life and from all economic backgrounds. But, they all have one thing in common. They all enjoy their Mustangs!

The members of all Mustang clubs are like a huge family, not like a Country Club. I say it like that because in a Country Club setting, you have to be accepted to join. With Mustang clubs, everyone who is interested in the Ford Mustang is welcome. This is not to say that all Mustang clubs are the same. You may have to look around and chose a Mustang club that suits you. You may want to show your Mustang at shows. You may want to drive your Mustang to fun places and not show your Mustang at shows. You may want to get on a racetrack and drive your Mustang fast! Or, maybe the slower pace of nice picnics and parades suits you best. These are all things you can do with your Mustang. In fact, there are Mustangs clubs for just about everything you could want to do with your Mustang!

Mustang clubs are a huge part of the Mustang lifestyle. I can honestly say that I’ve known many people who belong to Mustang clubs who didn’t own a Mustang. Most of these people were, shall we say, between Mustangs. But, they enjoyed the clubs so much that they didn’t stop attending the outings and meetings just because they didn’t own a Mustang at that time. The same goes for members who are restoring a Mustang. To be honest with you, there are members in clubs that most of the other members have never seen their Mustang because it’s undergoing a very slow restoration. However, that doesn’t stop them from being a part of the Mustang lifestyle!

Most Mustang clubs have some type of monthly event that is designed around the Mustang lifestyle. A traveling event to somewhere local that allows those who attend to drive their Mustang (if they chose to as some members Mustangs may be show cars, under restoration or not driven for some other reason) and enjoy spending time with other like minded Mustang enthusiasts. Again, this is the Mustang lifestyle. This can be to a car show, to a local point of interest, or, simply to a diner in another city a few miles away where everyone can get together and enjoy each others company. Many Mustang clubs will have at least one overnight trip planned for their club members that you can attend if you wish. As you become more involved with your local club, you will determine how far you want to jump into the Mustang lifestyle. But, unless you make the initial jump, you won’t know what you’re missing.

Last Saturday, I attended a picnic at MatherRegionalPark that three of the local Mustang clubs all join in and hold each year. They are, the Sierra Mustang Club, the Sacramento Area Mustang Club and the Golden Hills Mustang Club. This has become an annual Mustang event where these three Mustang clubs all get together to enjoy each other’s company and party together. They trade information, make arrangements for their members to attend the other club’s shows and events, hold a great raffle and eat like there’s no tomorrow! It’s a great time for all and this is exactly what I’m talking about when I say “Mustang Lifestyle”. Without being a part of the Mustang lifestyle, these people wouldn’t all get together in this way and have such a great time talking about Mustangs and many other topics as well.

Mustang clubs from all over the world hold these types of events and welcome everyone who is a Mustang enthusiast to come and enjoy the Mustang lifestyle with them. I’m sure there’s one near you. Check in your area for a Mustang Club that you can join. It will open up a whole new way of life for you. It will open up, the “Mustang lifestyle!”
